The Herdade da Samouqueira, as old as memory, is located in the Alentejo region of Southern Portugal, 185k (115 miles) South of Lisbon, on the edge of the coastal plateau, near the small, ancient town of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Adjacent to the Parque Nacional which stretches along the coast till Cape St. Vincent, it covers 24.3 hectares (60 acres) of open tableland, wooded ravines, grassy slopes and a former rice field, now used as pasture. The herdade is bordered by a small stream, which feeds a herb fringed watering hole that has not fallen dry in living memory, and there is a fresh water spring in the woods. One easily spends an hour or two wandering about the property.

Most of the hillsides are covered in a forest of cork trees, many of them ancient, with thick, gnarled trunks. Other parts are graced by stands of eucalyptus. There are countless narrow paths along the slopes and into the ravines, or barrancos as they are called locally, created by goats, cows and wild animals. The fauna includes fox, partridge, wild boar and should include Iberian lynx because the terrain is very suitable.

Privacy is assured by the herdade's size and location. The entire property is fenced, except where the slopes are too steep to invite entry.

Herdade da Samouqueira, the core of what was once a very large estate, named on all detailed maps of the region, is located 5 km (3 m) from the pretty little oceanside town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, and 6 km from the West coast's white sand beaches. The cliff fringed praias of Porto Covo and Almograve are reached in 20 mins. Amenities in the surrounding villages are basic, but excellently suited to a country life style. Lovers of seafood and Alentejo caseiro cooking find plenty to enjoy. The area is largely unspoilt by mass tourism, and there is no infrastructure present or foreseen to attract it.

Construction is allowed up to 962 m2: 486 m2 residential buildings plus 486 m2 'support buildings' such as garages, stables, studios and other constructions of a predominantly utilitarian nature. Installation of a combined solar and wind energy system is recommended, if necessary (e.g. use for commercial purposes) with generator backup.

Samouqueira is 1:45 hrs by car from Faro Airport, 2:00 hrs from Lisbon Airport.
