In the rainy season, the small stream framing the arrozal turns into a lazy river 150 m (500 ft) wide, an impressive expanse of water. The red clay washed off the shale-rich mountains brings memories of tropical rivers, mostly African - and reminds one how close the other continent is, and how similar in features, the same Atlantic coastal profile continuing along the edge of the continental shelf for thousands of miles. The birds here too, the black-and-white storks and egrets, are shared with North-Africa. Turtles love this season.
