Many of the cork oaks are old and gnarled, showing the twists of fate. This one may once have been hit by lightning. The eucalyptus trees in the background are part of a stand that was clear-cut by the previous owners and is now about twelve years into its second growth, which the current owners intend to be its last. As they are growing out of mature, well-rooted stumps, growth to greater girth is likely to be fast. Ferns, like those in the foreground, are found in the wettest, shadiest parts of land, like this spot close to the bottom of the central barranco.
