VENUGOPALA KRISHNA
India, Karnataka
Nayaka Period, 18th C
Bronze
Height 22 cm

Venugopala Krishna in Karnataka style of late Vijyanagar period, but probably made in the period of the Nayaka kingdoms, 18th C. In Venugopala Krishna figures, the artist was not bound by the strict rules of tala (rhythm, proportions), but had artistic freedom. Krishna in this depiction would originally have had a flute in his raised hands, but the flute here (as often in these pieces where the flute is not part of the bronze sculpture) is missing. Most likely a small bamboo flute was inserted.

Provenance: Lakshmi Narasimha, India
